we saw a lot of this when we were in Thailand - poor families who would sell a daughter - some as young as 10 - so that the rest of the family could have a better life. (what i later started to feel had been done to me.) they often sent them off to the city from a rural area - often pretended they did not know what kind of "work" the child was going to do.
