Priest recruiter charged with sexual abuse of minor

CLAYTON, Mo. -- A Roman Catholic priest who was one of the St. Louis Archdiocese's recruiters of young priests has been charged with sexually abusing a male minor seven years ago, officials said Thursday.

The Rev. Bryan Kuchar is the first priest in Missouri to be arrested on abuse allegations in the current scandal that has engulfed the U.S. arm of the church following a Boston case that focused new scrutiny on how its leaders deal with such problems.

Kuchar, 36, was charged Thursday with six counts of second-degree sodomy. He is associate director of the archdiocesan vocations office, a job in which he talked to young men to encourage them to enter the priesthood.
