Bill Hicks was on of the funniest guys the USA has ever seen, but I think he had greater critical acclaim here in the UK.

This poem is taken from a book "Love All The People" - a collection of Bill's letters, lyrics and routines.
I sense that Bill survived 'something', what I don't know, but nobody could write this without living through some hard time.

Here's the poem.

(January 28, 1986)

Iím done with excuses
Iíve run out of time
Iíve wallowed in sorrow
And spent the night cryiní
Iíve floundered in darkness
in sight of the light
If I am to live, then now is the time.

Oh you knew I knew you
Iím crying out to be led through
the valleys of darkness
these pits full of fears.
I only know one thing for sure, I know
I donít belong here.

When I was younger things went untold.
I built up a hard front, I acted quite bold.
My feelings were strangers, interpreted none,
I felt treated more like a daughter and less like a son.

I was only a youngster when I fell in love
My heart touched anotherís outside of my home
My passion was fragile, obsession quite real.
I followed my loverís dream till the end.

My chasm of darkness needs to be filled
Recovered feelings from long ago years
No one was there to understand,
Though as a child
I thought like a man

Now I feel both - so young and so old
My body more tired and desperate, not bold
Iíve run from the shadows into the night
If I am to live, then now is the time.

Bill Hicks.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.

Thanks for sharing the Bill Hicks poem. It's too bad that most people here in states don't know about him. I think he might be, other than Lenny Bruce, the single greatest comic to grace this planet.

Thanks for sharing the poem.
Take it easy,

I completely agree that bill hicks is among the best comics to ever grace the business, and i thank you for sharing this poem, as i've never heard or read anything of his that was not comedic in nature... besides some social commentary... \:\)

That's superb, I don't recall having heard of Bill Hicks. It's a very touching piece isn't it, and yes it sounds awfully like he survived a relationship that caused him to struggle as a child (and later as an adult of course). Deep indeed. I'll have to investigate this guy!

Thankyou for passing it on,

Thankyou so much for sharing this great poem, I have never heard of the author but I will look into his work. I also like you think that he had struggled in his youth. Thanks again for sharing your friend malidin.

Mother of the kingdom of silence I have obeyed you long enough!!!
