You, my friend, have calmed my soul.
You took me in.
You understood, when I did not,
And helped me down the awful road
That you had walked alone.
You took my hand.
You let my child love you
When I could not see it was my child.
You knew, and did not turn away.
You only let me talk
Let me cry
Let me feel.
You held my soul in the palm of your hand.
When I wrote words of anguish,
You took them in and soothed the pain.
When I was frightened,
You held me close and calmed my fear.
But most of all, you let me love.
You were not threatened,
For you knew it was my child who reached for you.
And you bent down
And picked us up
And carried us to peace.
I'm healing now, and I wasn't sure I would.
