What was it that made my spirit die
What caused my life of shame
What made the nights seem endless
And the daytimes full of blame

How could I make others see
The hell my life became
When I did not understand myself
Why my life was filled with pain

I did not want to know the truth
No one can understand the strain
Of living life with the worst secret
One of unexplicable pain

The way I managed to survive
No one can understand
The measures, complicated tricks
To avoid the scarlet brand

You think it's nothing to be a man
Who lives with unmanly truths
I should snap my fingers and be fixed
And the truths are a point that's moot

It's not that simple, its not that clear
I was led onto this path
Now I'm trying to take control again
Do I deserve the shaft?

I made mistakes and sacrafices too
To keep the world as shown
I've hurt too long, why would I
Wish the hurt on all I've known

Love me for the heart I have
And the spirit to survive
Upon reflection, I've done great things
So others lives could thrive

The shame, my shame, has power no more
I will win this fight
And on that day of peace on earth
You will see a soul that's right

I think the spirit you are talking about will sometimes fade when things seem so utterly black, but if we will allow it to do so it can burst into bright light again. I think that's part of what you are trying to do in writing these poems, isn't it?

Much love,

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back:
This land was made for you and me.
(Woody Guthrie)

There is no shame here....only acceptance and love. We leave our shame on the outside where it belongs, with the people who deserve it, and we walk in here clean and pure and untouched, because that's who we are. No one has soiled us in any way. What they did to us came from the evil that was inside them. If the flower is trampled, we do not blame the flower, but still see it for the beautiful creation it is. And we nurture it, so that it can bloom again.

This is a place of healing...a place to understand that you are still whole and still beautiful. I think that's what the healing is all about.

I'm healing now, and I wasn't sure I would.

really related to your poem.

How could I make others see
The hell my life became
When I did not understand myself.
You think it's nothing to be a man
Who lives with unmanly truths
I should snap my fingers and be fixed.
