It was my father. He was charming, witty, a highly respected evangelical/pentecostal church board member and deacon, a Boy Scout leader, and the leader of the church children's ministry.
He used the church teachings to force us to submit to his assaults and to suffer in silence. He often referred to the story of Abraham and Isaac, and the scriptures stating that children must obey their parents and that the man is the head of the house.
I have taken to the stand-up comedy stage to educate other male survivors and those who try to love them. I blog about my isolated religious upbringing where physical and sexual abuse were commonplace and I serve as a facilitator of a weekly support group for men who have suffered sexual assault.
