A dark night long ago
Turned a life
Changed a soul

The life that was
Will never be
All that's left is you and me

Words of pain and hope expressed
To heal ourselves
Of the left over mess

Yet write and write I do try
Left without tears
My eyes are dry

Events that cycle through my head
The memories I have
Remind I might have been dead

But what if I did change the end
Prevent that life
From going round the bend

Write the words that should have been
A different act
A different scene

The story plays out without any dread
Ending safe at home
In my own warm bed

I would be so nice if it were true
To write a new story
And see it on through

My Mind to absorb and assimilate
The events as written
Not the ones from that date

Oh what a different world it would be
To erase that event
And recover me

But the story you see it doesn't change
Try as I might
For a different refrain

I can still dream that it could be true
And write a new ending
For me and for you
Presence is the key, for all we have is now.
All we ever have is right now.

Adam A Gedman:

Thank you for your poem which reminds me that being in recovery is like living somewhere between the middle and the end of a story: a tough place to be and the right place to "still dream".

Lose the drama; life is a poem.

great poem, with a message of hope.

eyes forward to the fiction of our future.
we all have the power to write a different ending to our story.

i give you the words of ex pistol johnny rotten lydon.

"I wrote my own future. I had to. It was the only way out."
     ~ John Lydon

but we can also write ourselves a different beginning.

"Nothing changes more constantly than the past;
for the past that influences our lives does not consist of what actually happened,
but of what men believe happened."      ~ Gerald White Johnson

so to sum it up... with all 3 tenses.

"Hate comes from the past, fear from the future.
Pain and pleasure are now...
You have to bring the feelings together, blend them,
and step away from time."      ~ Steven Barnes

"Who controls the past, controls the future.
Who controls the present controls the past."      ~ George Orwell
