Not exactly a CSA issue but yesterday my youngest turned 13. She's one of those "13 going on 22" type kids. But what that means is no more little kids at home. I've been raising children for over 30 years, sometimes even doing a good job. Ten of them. No more colored pictures on the refrigerator, no more silly songs, cartoons, school plays, help tying shoes or going to the bathroom. No more quiet moments putting them to bed. telling them stories. They are all too big for any of that. What I'd give to hold a 6 year old on my lap again and make up a story and hear him giggle! Put her to bed and see the look of safety and security she has, going off to sleep. We have boxes of saved toys. Twenty-five year old legos and little army men, and dinosaurs.

I'm proud of my grown children, and happy with my teenagers. But I miss the little kids. I tried so hard (maybe too hard) to give them the kind of childhood I lost. Maybe I was just trying to relive it through them. But they turned out okay. Now all I can do is wait for grandchildren. None on the horizon. Sigh.............

hey Jude,
wow, your post is so nostalgic, warm and nice.
Congratulations on your kids, that is huge achievement.

Not sure what to say on your remark about grand children, I'm sure they are on their way.

You know my dad feels like the only grown man in the city living without them so I'll add here another sigh....

You've been a great father, and when the time comes you'll be a superb grandfather too.

I love your post. And how appropriate that you have chosen the holiday season to help us remember our own blessings. I am a grandfather now, one boy-named after me, one girl, named after my wife, each child is now 2 1/2 yrs old, born 30 days apart, one to each of my sons. Words cannot describe what the feelings are when I am with them or think of them. Or how much life these cousin-almost twins bring to my otherwise quiet existence! You are more than going to love it. Blessings untold, indeed.

Thank you again, Jude, for such a poignant reflection of life.

btw I am a VERY YOUNG grandfather!!! just in case anyone was wondering.
For now we see through a glass, darkly.

Your post shakes all the emotional walls I've built up. My two sons are grown and long gone from home. The pictures and drawings have now been taken off the refrigerator, but will never be thrown away - stored for the days of remembering when...

I'm very proud of them, and like to think I had something to do with their successes. No grandchildren in sight, but some of their toys are still here, just in case.

Thanks for your "non-CSA" post.
Whether you say, "i can't do this," or say, "I CAN DO THIS" You're Right.

hey jude.
i can feel you.
my youngest just turned 13 in oktober.
he is already as tall as i am, and almost as heavy.
he started growing a moustache at the age of 10.

just like you, i do so dearly miss my little ones.
i hardly know these young adults living in my house.
it takes a great effort to keep the communication lines open.
i have to take each one of my teens out,
one at a time, and devote the entire evening or day to them in order to get there attention.
but it is always worth it to hear them open up and start to tell all about what they are up to.

like my wife says,
we traded in our babies for messy roommates who don't pay rent.
i love them so much, that don't bother me at all.

as long as they keep getting good marks, and stay active and productive, i am a proud papa.

i can only imagine raising ten kids over 30 years.
i don't want to imagine it, it sounds far too difficult.
i only had to raise three, starting with my oldest, who will be 18 in only 3 months.
parenting is such sweet sorrow.

thanks for a positive post.
