Hey you
Smiling at me from the black and white
Straddling your brand new bike
Cute little shit aren’t you?
Well, I just want you to know
Mr. OCPD hates you

Right now, sitting here
Tears streaming down my face
I’d like to grab your pencil arms
Shake you
Say “WAKE UP!”
“Don’t you see what’s coming?”

You could have
Walked away from those boys
Opted out of their secret games
Stood up to your brother much sooner
Learned how to kill with words
Believed your parents would love you, no matter what

You let brother, bullies, boys
Beat you, use you, push you inward
‘til you no longer lived in this world
Only walked through it like a ghost
Living instead in the dark place
Behind your downcast eyes

You agreed when that girl said “You’re ugly!”
Said “No thanks’ when the gorgeous one
Asked you to the prom
In the years between hid away, pouring out rage
Self-loathing on endless white pages
Gave a home to a quiet obsession
I can’t really explore, yet can’t quite ignore

Bad decisions, boy
More ever since
You’ve made them your career
Never reaching higher
Nor taking the gifts you were offered
Accepting only the love you felt you deserved
Never thinking you were worth even that

Now look at me
Look at my eyes
Do you see the frustration, from all the years lost?
Hints of obsessions, doubts and confusion
47 years old and I feel like a child
Sorting your legacy of weakness

I’m doing the work that you didn’t
Some days I get so tired of it
I thought I’d come so far
Today tells me otherwise

I know what they say about your measure of blame
Maybe tomorrow I’ll agree
For tonight I’m laying this mess
Right at your shoeless feet

Your poem haunts me ...
brings so many things to mind
that I don't like to see
not quite the same as you
but both of us are true
we deserve what is our due
inside it hides
behind the lies
the spirit of that little boy
used like a worthless toy
reach in ... take his hand
help him out
there is no doubt
you can be one
it can be done
the him and me
can be we
Experience is a brutal teacher.

I pick up your little boy and dust him off and give him a big HUG.
He's valuable and worthy and belongs with you. He needs your protection, love and care. He is part of you.
