I HATE pedobear and when I see tv shows, comic strips, or hear jokes about sexual abuse or assault. If you don't know what pedobear is, its a cartoon bear that people photoshop into another photograph, hinting at CSA. It is supposed to be funny. It isn't funny at all! It is fucking horrible that so many people find that stuff funny, its desensitizing them about abuse, thinking that abuse isn't something that actually exists, or it is something to take lightly, to laugh at. Whys is it, that in Family Guy, there is that old guy who is obviously a pedophile, who is always trying to get Chris? Why is this supposed to be funny? Some of us WERE Chris, and we had an old guy in our lives trying to fuck us. And now this is something that is supposed to be a joke? This show is so popular and people find it funny. The media needs to stop taking this shit so lightly, acting like its a joke. I can't tell you how many stupid fucking Michael Jackson jokes I heard that are supposed to be funny. Maybe those people need to be fucked hardcore as a child to realize the full extent of CSA. To realize that shit isn't funny or a joke, and shouldn't be made to seem that way.

Fuck the media.

I agree on both.

Throw in the way the media encourages violence and racism too.

Its fucked up. I guess we change things person by person. Making sure bullies bigots and sexual stereotypes don't get reinforced around us. And don't give up that we can make a difference.

I had forgotten all about the Family Guy pedo. Way for me to be nauseous on my way into work...

Yet for some reason I remain as unoffended as I always was by the infamous Penny Arcade "Dickwolves Incident." I think it's because PA is presenting it as a bad thing and the oblivious nature of the other characters as also bad, whereas FG presents its pedo as BEING the joke and he's a character with his own story cycle and motivations. Also have to say I was really skeeved out by the episode where Peter sees how big Chris' penis is and then waits til he's asleep and exposes him to his mother so they can both talk about it like its the weather report.

..............motherfucker. TRIGGERED. Cause when I was 12 I had a hellish kidney infection, 105 fever and pissing blood and missed school for 2 weeks and had to get an ultrasound with that gel on you like a woman. And at one point the doctor is checking me all over and I have to strip to my underwear and he's still checking me out and I start to think, "oh no, is he...?" My mother is a pediatrician so when I was a kid she was my doctor. I never had any troubles downstairs so that was never an issue. This was the first time in years I'd been sick enough to need a specialist, I didn't know what other doctors were like and now I had the all-new experience of being near-naked, WITH A MAN, and I'd read about doctors touching your privates but had no idea that was part of today's menu and they really should warn a guy. The dr was babbling about meaningless bullshit, sports and classes and bikes, he was OBVUIOUSLY trying to distract me and I knew why and I was fucking terrified. I had been violently molested 4 years earlier and it was at approximately this point when I was finally "figuring it out" - but looking back I now see there had been subconscious fear-centric results in effect the entire time and they were all lit up Defcon-1 right then. And then it happened, in the middle of his doggerel about sports and my croaking "uh huh"s he flips my briefs down and starts groping and pulling... it's funny, I know he was a doctor and I know he wasn't doing anything inappropriate and if my son were pissing blood I'd want him checked down there too.... but I will never forget how I was consumed by horror and humiliation, an early and unforgettable trigger.

And then the doc stops his distraction monologue and starts talking medical words and I look up and *****MY MOTHER IS RIGHT THERE!!!!***** Getting a full-on look and giving her doctor commentary too. I was so shocked I thought I'd faint, I couldn't look at her looking at me so I closed my eyes, I heard them both agree on the word "pre-pubertic" and I wanted to scream THAT'S NOT TRUE, I've got some hair, you're looking right at it for fucks sake! Instead I just lay there in display. After, they left and my dad came into the room and in the most awkward and embarrassing dialogue imaginable asked me, his face blushed scarlet, "Iseverythingokaydowntheredoyoupullonyourpenisdoyoumasturbate?" And I stammered out yeah but not enough to damage myself and cause internal bleeding. And he nodded silently and RAN out of the room. I knew that MBing was normal, the very same "growing up" books my parents gave me said so - but now I saw my dad found it dirty and thought that way about me too. So, strike 2 for the day. Weeks later when I worked up the nerve to confront mom, she nastily shot me down: she was a doctor, doctors get to look at everything, she examined boys my age all the time, it was only because she was a doctor that I hadn't had to stay at the hospital, that I was immature for complaining and that was that. Fucking spitting mad at me for not thanking her for getting an eyefull.

......anyway. I hate that episode of Family Guy.

I didn't have a clue about pedobear. Soooo, went to Youtube. And yeah, I am old enough to manly say I am MORTIFIED... and highly pissed that this, a symbol for child rape, is supposed to be funny. I found no humor. Only the age old disgust of pedophilia.

And thankfully, I haven't seen enough of Family Guy to know about the old guy. Thanks, Si, for cluing me in on this stuff. And Matt, brave stuff to share your flashback trigger.

Hi guys. I suppose I have a slightly different take on these things. I agree that pedo bear and Herbert from Family Guy are fucked-up things to be made a joke and that neither of them are really funny. I don't like it when people make child abuse jokes of any kind because to me, there is no more sensitive a subject. "To me" is the important part of that sentence though.

To be honest, I tend to have a really fucked-up and twisted sense of humor myself. I'm certain I've laughed about things and even made jokes about things that many other people would consider highly offensive and wrong. So, that having been said, I guess I can't get all bent out of shape when someone makes a joke out of something that is a sensitive subject to me.

When it comes down to it, that's just kind of the way things are these days when it comes to satire and comedy. Nothing is sacred. There are no walls anymore. Absolutely anything is fair game. I mostly consider that to be a good thing but I also understand why people get upset.

Matt, that was a very powerful trigger you shared with us. I'm glad you put that out there. It's amazing the degree to which things that seem relatively benign to others can set off our issues in the worst possible way. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

Oh, and just as an aside, Family Guy is ok but South Park is much better/funnier. Peace,

I think it is not just that nothing is sacred. Somethings are not funny in this culture. The idea of a woman getting raped is very rarely seen as funny, and when someone tries to joke about it, they get ridiculed by the media and by fellow comedians (Daniel Tosh found this out the hard way recently).

Pedobear is a disgusting exception, as the photoshopped target is often a girl. But pedobear is mostly the domain of stupid teenagers who think anything shocking is funny. They are trying to push the limits, most of them will grow out of it, and its not the kind of humor that every makes it to mainstream media.

Humor that DOES make it to mainstream media, unfortunately, does often revolve around male rape. Whether it be Family Guy or movie after movie, jokes abound about men getting sexually assaulted. I wrote the following on another site about a movie I saw recently. I'll cut and paste it here:

The only thing I continue to hate about these films is the threat of being on the receiving end of homosexual behavior as the ultimate squeamish joke. Its far from being particular to this film, but I wish people would move on. Yes, I get it. Men don't want to be raped. Women don't want to be raped either, but its not constantly a punchline. Treating homosexual activity in that squeamish adolescent way: 1. diminishes the real tragedy of male/male rape and 2. subtly reinforces the idea that if you let it happen, consensual or not, you are weak and less of a man. This was already in my head because of the trailer before the movie, where its apparently HILARIOUS for a man to be forced to have his car washed by effeminate men in shorts. It can't just not be a turn on, it has to be an "ugh" moment. So I was already predisposed to look for that stuff in the movie at hand, but it is there too.
To sum it up, the movie has a lot more to say than one might initially think. In some ways it is reinforcing the stereotype of "men getting raped is funny" (if the female lead had been the one scared of being raped, it would not have been treated as humorous.)

The same goes for Family Guy. Meg takes a lot of verbal abuse on that show (which is also awful), but even the supposedly edgy writers wouldn't have a plot where she was in danger of being raped. Because everyone knows that's not funny. But as long as men are still seen as weak for being victims, it will continue to be funny to watch their misadventures avoiding it.

I'm all for satire and gallows humor, but I always thought Family Guy was subpar. Like Ken said, South Park does satire much better.

I loved the golden age of the Simpsons, and I've lost track of how many Family Guy episodes are straight-up rip-offs of the Simpsons...not tributes, but just flagrant theft.

I don't lend the show any credence. The only takeaway might be that the pedo bear's sinister nature has been exposed. Still, there are better ways than this drivel.

strange, but the origin of this meme is apparently benevolent.
it was used as an alert to expose pedophiles.

"Pedobear is a cartoon mascot that became a well-known icon through its usage on 4chan to signal moderators and other users that illegal pornographic content had been posted."

According to Wikipedia: "Pedobear is an Internet meme that became popular through the imageboard 4chan. As the name suggests ("pedo" being short for "pedophile"), it is portrayed as a pedophilic bear. It is a concept used to mock pedophiles or people who have an interest in minors or jailbait. The bear image has been likened to bait used to lure children or as a mascot for pedophiles."

On the same topic, back in the seventies Hustler Magazine (well there was no internet back then) used to have a cartoon feature called "Chester the Molester", the humorous adventures of a pedophile. Like this was such a funny subject. After Hustler's publisher, Larry Flynt, was converted to Christianity by Jimmy Carter's sister, he changed the cartoon's name to "Chester the Child Protector", perhaps the only case in history of a pedophile being reformed. A footnote: the cartoonist who created the series (Dwaine B. Tinsley) was convicted of molesting his own 13 year old daughter.

And while I'm on the subject, I recall a totally offensive scene in the movie "Airplane", where Captain Oveur, the pilot played by Peter Graves, says to a boy visiting the cockpit:
Captain Oveur: Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?
Captain Oveur: You ever been in a cockpit before?
Joey: No sir, I've never been up in a plane before.
Captain Oveur: You ever seen a grown man naked?
Captain Oveur: Joey, have you ever been in a... in a Turkish prison?

Granted, both examples are from over 25 years ago, but we've got alot of work to do before this society takes us seriously.
