without really realizing it, i have been somewhat self-absorbed lately with a series of misfortunes.

the newspaper this morning put my petty problems into perspective.

http://www.theprovince.com/news/twins+left+motherless/8313966/story.html

A man and his twin children are left motherless after a horrific crash tore his family apart, claiming five of his loved ones... wife, five-year-old son, three-year-old daughter, sister, and 68-year-old mother.

The family was returning from a religious ceremony, when a van allegedly ran a red light, killing all five passengers instantly.

i started crying when i read this.
then i started crying when i wrote this.
my therapist has been trying to get me to cry for months now.
i haven't cried for so long,
i thought i had forgotten how,
but now i can't stop.
it looks like i am still human.

this is a healthy sign. sorry about the circumstances that triggered your crying - but glad you were able to feel and express that grief.

i have found that "we" often are able to empathize with others in their pain more readily than to feel the pain that we rightfully should be feeling for ourselves. somehow we think we don't deserve to receive sympathy or compassion from anyone - even ourselves.

it won't be long, i'd guess, until you are able to feel the appropriate emotions on your own behalf.
