The number of detected crimes of people accessing illegal images of children has gone up by 48% in four years, according to research by BBC News.

Mr Brown added that there was also a decrease in the age of children being abused and that more children were being encouraged to do sexual activities through webcams which were then filmed and uploaded online rather than being groomed to meet up.

"The inhibitions are too few, especially if men are in a room by themselves - it's too easy," he said.

"We need to be asking what is the male psychology that makes them view this imagery? It's not just a few sick men, it's a much larger number.

Donald Findlater from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation, a child protection charity, said the problem was more widespread than police figures show.

"We have to recognise the limited potential of law enforcement to fully deal with this problem," he said.

I'm not sure, is this a good thing or not? Are they saying the police are getting better at catching them so more people are geting caught? Or has the amount of people watching it increased so that's why more people are being caught?

This is probably the thing that makes me most insane. Like not knowing who has looked at my pictures. It could be ANYONE. Like my teachers, my doctor, even my friends maybe. I just don't know. I'm paranoid about it. I want my pictures back but its not like that could ever happen.

At least they are asking the right kind of question for a change - about why the people who are watching it feel the need to. I hate when they just put it all on the kid to try and keep themselves safe.

It is bad news I guess.
Even police is better in discovering it it is clear growing pattern in number of people that are trying to accesses such material on web and amount of material available.

It is very good question about limited law enforcement to deal with this - this is problem on global scale as I see it and we have to face it: police and other agencies are terrible under-capacitated in knowledge and technical tools and legal actions are not bringing desired efforts at all. Otherwise we will have different picture- those are my 2 cents after considering couple of decades of fights with this type of crimes.

I don't want to sound negatively but I'm almost certain that gap in capabilities to fight child abuse/porn and related crimes is widening and legal enforcement institutions are seriously falling to catch the race...
