The waiting room

Large space, tile floor,
black & white checkerboard,
fluorescent lighting –
cold, sterile, harsh,
chrome and fake leather
and smoky glass furniture,
angular, functional,
spare and uncomfortable.
Balanced on the edge of a seat,
nothing yet happening,
waiting for something,
waiting for change…

I ask - Where am I?
That stale old cliché!
Disorientation has landed me here.
Partial amnesia –
What is your name, son?
Where are you going?
Can you remember how you got here?
Got reservations?
Do you have baggage?
How does it feel now – does it still hurt?
Where’s Information?
Is there a map?

It could be a hospital –
but is this emergency
or outpatient surgery?
Am I the patient
or a next of kin?
Just a by-stander, a hopeful well-wisher
or the accident victim –
how can I tell?
Wait for prognosis:
How bad is it, doctor?
What are his chances?
Will I walk again?

It might be an airport –
departure gate area,
each has a boarding pass
except for myself
and am I waiting –
with my name on stand-by
to see if by some chance
they have room for me?
And if I get a ticket
how will I find out
where I am going,
where I have been?

Is this strange limbo
an airport or hospital -
a place to transit or a place to heal?
Maybe it’s both.
Maybe it’s neither.
Maybe I’m waiting for nothing at all.
Maybe I'll be here tomorrow and next year
like the guy in that movie, stuck in between.
For now I’m just waiting…
(Is it my turn yet?)
… waiting for something ,
waiting to change...

yes, Pero...

of course not as much or as fast as i'd like.
but the outcome is still unknown. like when you ask as a kid, "are we there yet?" i don't even know what healing or recovery looks like. so how will i know when i'm there?

BTW, the first stanza is a description of a part of a recurring nightmare i used to have when i was 11-18. sounds pretty prosaic to others but it was terrifying to me.
