Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart...
...Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary...
(2005 Stanford Commencement Speech)
Man he could have been talking about all of us! We all get caught in the trap of living someone else's life because we were all denied the sense of our own. That little boy's voice of intuition is strong if we have the calm to listen. Breath, meditate, move, hug, share, draw, laugh, cook, love, cry, pray, rail against the sky and the damage done but some way, find the calm and let the noise fall away.
We sometimes can't accept it or don't get what we expect to hear so we plug our ears. Maybe that's what recovery is all about, finally listening to the sounds our heart is making and letting that feeling truly wash over us. Others can help us, guide and give counsel, but No one can let that happen except us. We can't wait for rescuing or salvation or courage or clarity, we are already naked. Haven't we already paid the price? What more is there to lose?
