What does this mean to you?

" Once out of the shaft, they'll face challenges so bewildering, no amount of coaching can fully prepare them."

"Right now they are true heroes. Some will become celebrities if they want to. But eventually, a new reality will set in and for most, it won't be anything like the life they knew before.."

""Before being heroes, they are victims," University of Santiago psychologist Sergio Gonzalez told The Associated Press. "These people who are coming out.., are different people ... and their families are too."

"Health Minister Jaime Manalich said. "All of them will live through very difficult situations of adaptation.""

"The problem with being a hero is that "if you look down from the mountaintop, all you see is the abyss. It would make anyone feel vertigo," Behn said."

""They're in for the surprise of their lives. From here on out, their lives will have changed," Fisher predicted. "There aren't too many of those guys who get along because of all the attention, the lawsuits, the movie deals. Once money gets involved it gets ugly.""

These poor men have been through a terrible experience. After being in the dark for so long they are about to be thrust into the harsh light. They have been cut off from their families and friends for a long time.

Now they will get a lot of attention whether they are ready for it or not. Then the attention will fade and then what? Many cannot handle the spotlight's glare and the pressure to be a "hero". Being a hero is one thing when one set out to accomplish something. It is another thing when one is a hero du to having survived something thrust upon him.

I hope there is real support and help for these men.

Broad statements often miss their true mark.

They're going to be pulled in the surface in a capsule like thing thats barely wider than a regulation basketball hoop. That's the stuff of claustrophobic nightmares...

Your words Daryl, are immediate,

Definitely makes me want to be in the "present", so I can take advantage of every moment, er, not EVERY moment, but the ones I can see without obsessing. The world sees them as survivors, and look up to them for the camaraderie, and their unflinching spirit.
Then too, they are fighting the "man", the oppressive and uncaring business, so there is a new need to survive and the world will tune into that as well.

Interesting similarities to our cause, that we are surviving, and there is interest in our story. How do we get the world's attention? Whether we are thrust into the light due to accomplishment or surviving, will we be ready for the world's attention? How are we preparing for that now?

InsideTheWall, claustrophobic is JUST the word I was searching for, yikes! Yet, there is no doubt they survived the physical part of the experience, now to the fame side, and the "acting out".

I would say as survivors, most in MaleSurvivor,(like I am qualified to say that, however...) have been through the physical part of the trauma, and are contending with opening themselves up to hundreds, even thousands here in MS, through the forums, chat and PM's. As we search for survivors, and as we are being rescued, what are our "hoops"?

Thanks, Sam
