I started playing soccer at about 13 or 14. Getting involved in that, riding a bike everywhere (too poor for a car) and ice skating, I then started to run to improve my soccer as I got into high school and college. Then Uncle Sam issued an upper body to me in basic, now I have a spare tire but still run sporadically and referee. Running is probably one of the reasons I was able to cope so well. For some reason, I would feel the pain of emotions, and the pain from my body and oddly, I was able to handle them both. It would take the panic out of it. I started my 12 yo son running with me. His anxiety and meltdown issues (high functioning autism) have eased. Now I have a kid that is chomping at the bit for the snow to melt and tax season to end so we can run. I highly recommend any exercise that you can get into and just cruise, running, biking, swimming, etc.

I started lifting weights again at the ripe old age of 35. To reiterate what has already been said, regular exercise has had nothing but a positive impact on my life. I lift weights for about 3 hours a week, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and I also do about 45 mins of cardio after my weight sessions. I had lifted weights before but not on a regular basis but this time around I gave stuck to it. I noticed a change in my physique with the 1st 6 weeks and my body is responding more and more all the time. My mental wellbeing has also taken a massive boost. My T suggested doing this and as I have said I have never felt so great. My mood swings have nearly disapeared and my self confidence with who I am is great.

The only thing is to speak to your Doc before going on a gym regime and if you a little older I would suggest a daily multi vitamin and some cod liver oil.

I don't want to be massive or anything like that but seeing your body improve subtly over your weights will give you a great ego boost. It did me smile. Oh and I quite drinking at the same time and again that was a smart move.

I cannot get this started...I used to love working out, and then kids, marriag( failing now) lots of shit happening, and I really liked the way it made me feel and honestly, look. But I'm 50...almost 51.... if I had a buddy, if I knew how to have a buddy, it would be nice to get motivated abs feel and look better...realize this one S old post, but very real recent " I need to get back to health internal debate"

Over the past couple of years I go in spurts. There was one time over a year I gave it up. I remember clearly it was during a time, approximately 10 years ago, of extreme stress when my world was collapsing. The memories were flooding my mind, the attacks were on-going in the house and I could not function. It was the beginning of my end--I thought of dying and the thought of going to the gym, which I was a frequent goer--had no appeal. I know the dissociation was escalating because I had blank periods quite frequently--almost daily it would seem--and at times I would end on roads or places I did not know. I could not get the memories of the abuse out of my head and the attacks just escalated my fears and they became him in my mind.

After a year I returned to the gym--but since that time I have periods of paralysis. I get to the gym and my body says no, I freeze and the tension and tightening of the muscles is debilitating. There are days I would get on the treadmill or elliptical and I would just stand there, unable to move. I leave and these periods of anxiety eventually fade over a months time. I was in one of those states recently and for 4 weeks I would force myself to go to the gym, but after one exercise I was exhausted. I am better this week--went three times and only one day did I have the attack.

I enjoy working out, I use to find pleasure the endorphins would flow but now there are days I can tell nothing to bring joy is flowing from the brain. I hate this feeling and I do enjoy staying in relatively good shape. The intent is there but the will seems to give out. I use to go 5 or so times a week to the gym, do cardio for 45 min and light weights--but now the light weights feel like heavy weights. I get his sensation of fear, distress--I cannot describe it adequately--and then I run to get dressed and leave.
