NPR Sunday Weekend Edition did a piece on US prisons regarding the prevalence of rape in prisons. Under recommendations they are considering would include zero tolerance, medical and psychological treatment for all victims, etc.

Interestingly, the major offenders are corrections officers!

The piece should be available after noon on Sunday, 6/28 at:

Ken, I never went to prison, but I was sexually assaulted in the county jail. I'm not kidding when I say they don't give a damn. It took the jail 3+ days to get me to the emergency room, and by then most of my injuries had healed.

I have to correct myself. I have been going through the documents I have from the time in jail, and it was three days between report #1 and report #2. I think it was around 8-9 days total from the incident to the ER visit.

I found the letter. The initial complaint was on July 25th, 2007. A follow-up complaint was filed on July 31st, 2007. A rather impolite letter to the jail commander on the lack of action was filed on Aug. 3rd, 2007. That day I was taken to the ER. I think. I know they put me in solitary confinement for a while for reporting it. Total time is 9+ days.

I had bruises and by the time the jail acted they had healed.
