I need to put this in writing because I know he will never see it and would be embarrased even if he did. I know he will never toot his own horn, and hates being even acknowledged for what he has done in my life and the lives of others.

Dear -------------,

You are my hero. I have never had one before. No, you don't have super strength, and no, you can't fly. But you are my hero anyway.

You are my hero because of the selflessness you have shown me in accepting me as I am and letting me cry on your shoulder. You are my hero because you can let your own weaknesses show without reservation and still be strong.

You are my hero because no one in my life EVER gave so much to me without wanting something in return. You are my hero because of your compassion and your lack of judgment. Even when I hurt you deeply, you did not judge me. You took me back without a thought, brushing aside my apologies and tears.

You are my hero because you care and never stop. You are my hero because you tell me how hard it is to be up for others when you are down yourself. You are my hero because I have have heard you cry in pain and not feel ashamed. And be there in the next minute for someone else.

You have taught me to care, not only for others, but for myself. And how it is impossible to help others if you don't first help yourself.

You are my hero.

If I can be half the man you are, I will have achieved something.

I love you!

Bravo, Paul. Thank-you for your willingness to share this. I hope it was very cathartic.

Lots of love,

I have had a few of those heroic figures in my own life too. What a difference they made. Two of them know now, but one died before I could tell him. I regret that.

Much love,

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back:
This land was made for you and me.
(Woody Guthrie)

Holding Out For A Hero

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods?
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night toss and turn and dream of what I need

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere
Watching me

Through the wind and the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like the fire in my blood.

I've found mine. Hope you find yours! smile
