i wish when i was young that
someone would have taken the time
to show me how to dance.

i would sit in my chair and watch
as happy couples would take the floor
and move to the soft music

i waited patiently for somebody to look
my way and take my hand, but no one came.

one day i was asked, i did alright for a while
but not knowing how, i stumbled and fell,
i looked like a fool.

i kept practicing, thnking that if i could find the right steps or the right music, i could succeed.

then, from out of nowhere, someone came my way,
she wasn't worried that i couldn't do it perfectly,
she only wanted someone to dance with for a while.

once again, not understanding all the nuances of the dance,
i failed terribly.i slipped and fell, hurting my partner.

she moved on to find another,
hoping they were more able than i.

after a time i suddenly found my legs,
the music made sense, the steps came naturally to me.
i felt alive and confident and hoped that she would see the
change in me.

i went to the ball, to show her i could move the
way she needed.
unimpressed, she let me know that i had my chance,
and she was not sure i could keep on this way for long

i may slip and fall along the way, but now i know i can do it.

i do not want another partner, she is the one i want in my arms
the rest of my days.............

...............when i was young i wish that
someone would have taken the time
to show me how to dance.

Another really vivid use of images and ideas. There's a wonderful book about relationships in which the same image shows up a lot - the idea of two people dancing and getting used to each other as their rhythm changes.

Much love,

As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back:
This land was made for you and me.
