I also had exactly this experience in 7th grade. My Mom was too busy and I wanted oatmeal cookies. So I tried to make them myself. I couldn't find the baking powder or else it had been used up, so I tried using baking soda.
The cookies looked great when they came out of the oven. I plopped them into a lunch bag and took them to the school yard. I had only tried one of them, which had a disagreeable strong alkaline taste.
Another boy in my class came along and wanted some cookies. I opened the bag for him and he reached in. He took one small bite and threw the cookie across the play ground as far as he could throw it.
I dropped the bag full of cookies in the trash barrel.
