Horrible Games

How do you hate a family and love the people in it?
The games we play
Make me up like DNA
The genome of the lines between us
Our rules lay out the moves we make
I can run away from it all
But that move’s in the playbook
There beside my picture:
“This piece pretends he’s left the board
Captured, sidelined, no more to prove”
No dice

Our flights staggered in Phoenix, we’ll meet
When will our angry inner children roar forth?
Day three, I guess, but I hope the opening moves go on
Maybe a pressure valve, an ignorable edge
A double meaning, but no flagging the abandonment
The addictions, violence, and abuse
No alliances
No deploying revelations like landmines
No forcing the wounded into Pieta attitudes of comfort
I’ll be hiding in my room, my books, my thoughts
But the endgame’s here with me.

You see, when I’m tired,
The children I’ll never have tug my sleeve
My life’s not built for them
The board never lines up for family
Not even the hip new two-daddies-save-the-world kind
But I played it that way, and I don’t know any other moves
(I imagine that in the future
Everyone will be either a guard or a prisoner at Gitmo
And I’ve no wish to provide material for either side.)
In twenty-five years, you’ll all be gone
And the pain will not stop.
In fifty years, I will
And it will

That’s my strategy in Phoenix –
Blocking capture
The piece who rages from the side
The one who knows it doesn’t matter
The one who knows it ends with him
(But not in the healing way--
Is Darwin applauding?)
Believe that, and that I still love you all
You’re part of me,

I just wonder when the "game" becomes horrible and meaningless. Perhaps when, and only when, we give up on it and allow it to fall into neglect? But whose task is it to keep it thriving and healthy? And isn't there a point of no return?

Thoughts from my term paper for "Toxic Relatives 101".

Much love,

Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back:
This land was made for you and me.

A game becomes horrible when the other players decide not to play by the rules, when they substitute their own warped rulebook for the official standard according-to-Hoyle version. When the board is stacked against you, how long does one keep on trying to play until one realizes that it's not worth it any more?

David, I can really feel the emotions behind the words, and you know that I'm feeling for you.

But I gotta say that I'm going to have Chess in my head for the rest of the day!

Southwestern setting
But the city don’t know what the city is getting
The crème-de-la-crème of dysfunction
In a show with everything but Joan Crawford.
Just another stop in the family circus
Relatives drop in, play, checkmate, checkout and then you
Move on to another venue

Like New York – or Philadelphia – or – or this place!

Eight nights in Scottsdale make a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy
Eight nights in Scottsdale and the tough guys tumble
Can’t be too careful with your company.
I can feel a devil walking next to me…

We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
