When you re-trigger trauma you likely re-experience the trauma in a measurable way. Yeah you have to find ways of working through these issues that works for you.
The booze is you self medicating and it won't help. It'll push the depression. When you recuperate from the alcohol there is a recovery effect of anxiety. So imagine a sine wave. The initial high is the first drink, the second brings down to baseline and a low point on the sine wave. Then, upon waking after some rest, anxiety and the sine wave rises. Drink more alcohol and the cycle repeats.
