Hi. I'm new here and I am thinking of going to therapy for this . I am a veteran and I went through the substance abuse program almost twenty years ago. Is there any reason not to start there to find a therapist? I checked the List on your homepage but there is nothing in my area.

Hi, Welcome to MaleSurvivor. Glad you found us, but sorry for your need.

The verteran's admin. may well be as good a place as any. I have an older brother for whom they did excellent work in the mental health field. Give it a shot.

I agree with John. The VA is a good starting point for you. You also might want to read It will help you when your out shoping for a T. I remember when I first started my recovery I didnt relize I had the power when it come's to which T I would use. And reading this helped me so much expecily in weeding out the ones who were not qualified to help me or the ones who had no experence with my issues.

Hope it helps you as much as it did me.

Welcome to MaleSurvivor. I see no reason not to start with the VA. The list we have is incomplete and out of date - it's a project in itself, actually. I wouldn't be disappointed by the fact you don't find anything on our list for your area.

It works, too, sometimes to call your insurance company or go to their website. My insurance, at least, has a thing you can "fill out" on their website -- saying your needs -- and it can direct you to specialists who fit your needs. \:\)

Hey dogman,

Yup we are in the process right now of putting together a package to send to therapists to offer the directory to list their names... but a lot of good that does you now, eh?

One thing we can offer is this great article on how to shop for a therapist that is right for you.

A consumers guide to therapist shopping by Ken Singer

I hope that helps!
