Some people understand life better. They call some of these people "retarded". At the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win.

All, that is, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry.

They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back......every one of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better."

Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood; the cheering went on for several minutes.

People who were there are still telling the story.

Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves.

What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.

This is a really touching story. I work with the developmentally disabled, so it really hits home. I see this stuff sometimes with my clients, and it makes the job even more rewarding than it already is. \:\)

Thanks for posting. \:\)

pietie,

I think it's a wonderful story you shared here. Lot of folks can learn from it, and I see the parallel in this story of how folks on here help each other.

When I saw the title to the thread, I thought you were coming down on yourself for something.

pietie,

What a fantastic story. And a perfect telling of it! It really hits home and resonates with some of the ideas I've been working through since Napa.

Thanks so much for sharing it.

pietie, it shows folks just how retarded they themselves are, as these ppl show them how to be real citizens.
Looking after the weakest should be the goal of all mankind.

I find the title of this post extremely offensive.

I worked with the Special Olympics for a winter season -

it was one of the more - rewarding times - and helpful times of my life

it made me see others - love others - laugh and cry about the beauty of all humanity.

these olympians saw into me - my nervousness - and fear -
and said the boldest things -
so I forgot myself laughed out loud -

and gave them hugs back when they offered some. ...and they changed me -
i forgot my worries -
and i was supposed to be chaperoning them!

great spirits

these are life champions.

cheers piet - a good post

Just a thought Nobbynobs. Perhaps, as Pietie is from different culture, that word is not one of offense in his culture. Example: The Russian word for 'black person' is негр, which is pronounced 'nyeger'. Now, of course, I know that is not acceptable word to use for a black person in the U.S., even as it is still considered acceptable in Russia. But a friend of mine, he when he was in U.S. only for few months and did not know the language so good, he use this word very innocently in regard of a person, and of course, offend that person very much. There was much translating and apologies and understandings of different cultures that was required to make the situation right.

Just saying, perhaps the word you find offensive is not thought of as such to Pietie.

And whether it is true story or not, it is nice idea to think on I guess.

Andrei

The title is the same as the email i received it as. It was not in any means attended to be offensive to anyone. I have changed the title.

Personally, I did not find it offensive. However, I thought you were beating yourself up when I saw the title, and immediately wanted to offer encouragement. I hate to see anyone beat themselves up.

Hey,

It hit a nerve with me. I work with people who suffer from mental illness and derogatory terms like "retard" cut deep.

Anyway, thanks for changing the title.
