Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water.......

(Oops, sorry. I stole the wrong line!)

Life's answer to seriousness \:D

The Trabant - A people's car that wasn't

Back when there were two Germanies - East and West - the Communist government of the East wanted to manufacture a car that was affordable to the masses that wasn't burgeois. Well, they DID build a "people's car," but it wasn't no Volkswagen - it was a Trabant. Or, to put it mildly, the car from Hell!

Truly, the Trabi was a car that only it's mother could love if it had one. Boxy and ugly, it fit the bill for a non-showy vehicle. It was also made completely of plastic and was powered by a 2-stroke engine that was as loud as a lownmower, but had less power. It's top speed was a grand 40 mph!

Strangely enough, the Easters have gotten a little warm spot for this much-maligned vehicle. Collectors clubs have cropped up all over Germany and there are even Trabi shows!

Goes to show you, nostalgia can make crap king!

Until next time!

Peace and love,

Scot \:D

When I was about 11 yo my brother gave me his first car to drive aroung on the land at home, where I was lucky enough to have access to about 2 miles of dirt road that was closed one end, so no risk of oncoming traffic.

But with a top speed of 40 mph the old Goggomobile T300 wasn't exactly a rally car.

That's it! \:D
And it's smaller than it loks in the picture, your feet rested on the front panelwork and headlights, Ralph Nader would have left the Corvair alone if he'd ever seen one of these.
That was another East German contraption.

But I did have many hours of fun with it before it died.
Then I got a Vauxhall Victor with a big 1500cc engine, I was abut 13 then, and I drove it like it was stolen! \:D

I don't see anything wrong with it ;\) It's cheap transportation without any bells or whistles. (Wonders if it has a horn).

Although I wouldn't recommend it for anybody over 4'6". LOL

The autobahns of Germany were littered with broken down ones, when they revalued the mark.
And they all went home with a brand new mercedes or bmw, with their new found spending power,
