I have been on Paxil for three months, stupidly I dont take them for eight days.

I go back to my doc and say, hey, only three months left of having to take this stuff, and she says NO.

She says I have to start again from scratch!

I am just trying to warn you guys to keep to the meds you get prescribed rigidly, unless they cause side effects, they are part of a course.

It is real hard to know whether a drug is working when they can take months to *kick* in.

Obviously, none of us should need them, but they can be a lifeline, because my body just breaks out into excema without them, and that is not cool.

REality:

You learned a very valuable lesson that chronic pain patients MUST do. We have to follow the instructions of the doctor to the T and report any problems, side-effects, etc. to the doc. If you had done this with a pain mgmt. doc, you may have been dropped as a patient.

There are certain anti-depressants that are needed for a certain number of months for some people. Others will have to stay on them long-term. But for most of them, it takes several weeks to feel the full benefit if the med is going to work for you.

PS. With anti-biotics (as a side comment) ALWAYS take the full pre>

Yeah SD I know about Abs, and yeah ppl stop taking them when they feel better.

I suppose to always read the label on the drugs, but I always take the full course of ABs.

I suppose it is like start again stuff to me, but I never knew that,

Do not pass go,

Ste and SD,

Thanks 4 the reminders.

A lot of people self medicate, I know my sis does that. Last time needed to go to the syc ward because she stopped taking her anti-depressents. Very hard to see her like that.

I get mad at her when she tells me she is not taking her meds. They have a purpose, to make us better.

There has been a lot of talk lately about meds. here. What Ste and SD are true , once you have started meds it is very important to finish them.

I come from a different background when it comes the medication and I know I see things differently. It scares me when people here start swapping stories about the meds they take. Other people can read this and come to conclusions that only a professional should make. I am referring to self medicating or mixing medications.

It is important to remember that every person is different and that meds create chemical changes in our bodies. The meds that work for one person might not have the same effect on another. That is why only doctors who have extensive training are allowed to perscribe drugs. And still even they can make mistakes.

I am asking you all to please be careful when you talk about medication here.

I am saying this because I care about you all. I am not saying that medication is not helpful. It can be very helpful and allow people to live full and healthy lives. I am just giving a reminder that there are precautins that need to be taken and that we always respect the professional advice we get.

I certainly cannot function without them, but on a brighter note, there are a lot of new drugs which really are state of the mind.

What I am saying here, is that these new drugs can really work with little side effect, I suppose that we need to be aware of the availability of these ground breaking drugs.

I agree, it can be quite dangerous to stop taking medications. Specially since they effect areas of the brain, to stop them abruptly can cause 'rebound' affects, like worse depression, worse panick/anxiety, possibly even seizures (if you are on an antiseizure medicine for mood).

They are not for everyone though, that is for sure. A friend of mine who stopped taking his about a month ago has been much better off without the med. That is a rare exception, and if you are wanting to try life 'unmedicated', you should have your doctor work with you to go through it safely.
